Charlotte FC sign midfielder Brandon Cambridge after acquiring rights from Vancouver Whitecaps

Charlotte FC have signed midfielder Brandon Cambridge on a two-year contract, the club has announced.

Cambridge’s deal keeps him at Bank of America Stadium through the 2024 MLS season, with options on 2025 and 2026. The 20-year-old has signed a homegrown contract after playing for the University of Portland.

Charlotte have paid the Vancouver Whitecaps $50k in 2023 General Allocation Money (GAM) in exchange for the player’s homegrown territory exclusivity. The Whitecaps could also receive a further $100k GAM if Cambridge meets certain performance objectives, while they retain a percentage from any future sale.

“We were really impressed with Brandon during our scouting across the country at the collegiate level as we prepared for the 2023 MLS SuperDraft,” Charlotte sporting director Zoran Krneta said in a club press release. “We are pleased to sign him to a homegrown MLS contract as we continue our goal of developing young, talented players.

“Brandon has shown his potential at Portland and during his time in the Vancouver Whitecaps youth academy. We look forward to having him join us.”

Cambridge played 42 times for Portland University across three seasons, registering 16 goals and 13 assists. In November, the midfielder became the first Portland player to win the WCC Offensive Player of the Year.
