Mohammed Selected Second in MLS SuperDraft by Orlando City FC

DURHAM – Duke men’s soccer sophomore Shakur Mohammed was drafted as the second overall pick by Orlando City FC on Wednesday evening.

Mohammed becomes the second top-five selection in as many years after Thorleifur Ulfarsson was picked fourth overall by Houston Dynamo FC in the 2022 SuperDraft, and the seventh total dating back to the creation of an MLS College Draft in 1996. He joins Ulfarsson, Jeremy Ebobisse (2017), Andrew Wenger (2012), Ali Curtis (2001), Jay Heaps (1999) and Brian Kelly (1997).

Mohammed, a Kumasi, Ghana native, signed a Generation adidas contract earlier this week after a 2022 campaign that saw the sophomore lead the team in goals (10) and total points (22). His offensive efforts helped the Blue Devils secure their first undefeated regular season since 1999 and Duke’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals for the first time since 2006. The dynamic striker was named a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist, First Team All-American, First Team All-South Region, ACC Offensive Player of the Year and First Team All-ACC following the season.
