World Cup finals: Josip Juranovic passes the ball

Celtic right-back Josip Juranovic is attracting a lot of interest following his excellent World Cup displays with semi-finalists Croatia.

Juranovic helped his nation earn a third-place finish in Qatar, four years on from finishing as runners-up.

It was quite remarkable to see the 27-year-old performing so well at the World Cup given the fact he has fallen out of favour at Celtic Park.

Ange Postecoglou opted to start Anthony Ralston in the weeks prior to the showpiece tournament.

On top of this, the Bhoys recently completed the signing of Canadian international right-back Alistair Johnston, who will officially join in January.

This could open the door for Juranovic to leave, and given his performances in Qatar – especially against Brazil in the quarter-finals – he is not expected to be short of options.

Remarkably, the Celtic back-up is attracting interest from European giants Barcelona.

Not only Barcelona, but Atletico Madrid, and two ‘unnamed Premier League clubs’ are ‘keen’, according to Sky Sports.

Journalist Dharmesh Sheth revealed on Twitter on Monday that this was the case, while noting the signing of Johnston, which hints that a move would be possible.

Sheth wrote: ‘Barcelona interested in signing Celtic right-back Josip Juranovic. 2 unnamed Premier League clubs also keen & Atletico Madrid.

‘Juranovic impressed for Croatia at World Cup – played every minute. Celtic have signed right-back Alistair Johnston.’

While the English clubs were not named, it is always fun to speculate.

Out of the so-called ‘big six’, you can probably rule out Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham.

Manchester United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been linked with an exit in recent months and if he leaves, Erik ten Hag will prioritise the signing of a new player in his position.

Chelsea have also been linked with signing a new right-wing-back, and although Juranovic does not play there for club or country, his energetic performances at the World Cup show that he is suited for that role.

I think it’s fair to assume Nottingham Forest are one of the two players linked. If you can kick a ball, you have probably received a call from them at some point.

Newcastle United are another team who have been tipped to sign a new right-back to compete with Kieran Trippier.

They are also believed to be interested in Leeds United’s Cody Drameh, who is surprisingly not getting much of a chance under Jesse Marsch.

I think that’s enough…
