Pitt, Syracuse Earn Quarterfinal Wins to Advance to NCAA Men’s College Cup

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Atlantic Coast Conference programs will comprise half of the 2022 NCAA Men’s Soccer College Cup field, as Pitt and Syracuse earned quarterfinal victories Saturday. Pitt knocked off Portland, 1-0 in double overtime, while No. 3 seed Syracuse defeated Vermont, 2-1.
 
This marks the fourth straight season in which two ACC teams advanced to the NCAA Men’s College Cup. The ACC has had at least one conference team in the NCAA Men’s College Cup in 21 of the last 22 seasons. Sixty-three ACC teams have now reached the Men’s College Cup all-time. ACC teams have won 18 NCAA men’s soccer championships, including Clemson in 2021. Pitt and Syracuse each are vying for their first national championship in men’s soccer.
 
The Orange will play Creighton next Friday in the NCAA semifinals, while Pitt will play the Indiana/UNC Greensboro winner. The NCAA Men’s College Cup will be contested at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina, with the semifinals on Friday, Dec. 9 and the championship match on Monday, Dec. 12. ESPNU will broadcast all three matches.
 
Pitt (12-4-5) advanced to its second NCAA College Cup in program history and second in three seasons. Valentin Noel headed home a Bertin Jacquesson cross in the 104th minute as Pitt secured its fourth straight NCAA Tournament win. The Panthers out-shot Portland 32-8 and put 11 shots on goal to just two for the Pilots.
 
2022 ACC Champion Syracuse (17-2-4) earned the program’s second NCAA College Cup berth and first since 2015. The Orange received first-half goals from Curt Calov and Levonte Johnson, and the defense buckled down in the second half to allow just one Vermont shot.
 
Seventh-seeded Duke’s run in the NCAA Tournament came to an end Saturday with a 3-2 loss to Creighton.
