USC Names Orange Coaches Regional Staff of the Year

The United Soccer Coaches announced the Syracuse men’s soccer coaching staff as the South Region Staff of the Year. Region classification is based on conference membership.

Head coach Ian McIntyre and his staff of Jukka Masalin, Sean Lawlor and Michael Flynn win the award after leading the Orange to their second Atlantic Coast Conference title and second NCAA Championship Quarterfinal appearance.

The Syracuse coaching staff have orchestrated one of the best single-season turnarounds in school history. After going 8-8-2 in the 2021 season, the Orange sit at 16-2-4 heading into the Elite Eight. It represents the largest win improvement between seasons since the 2011 and 2012, when Syracuse went from 3-12-1 to 14-6-1.

For the first time in program history, the Orange won the Atlantic Division title and ACC Tournament in the same year. Syracuse secured a program record 17-points in ACC regular season play.

Flynn, the goalkeeping coach, has pushed redshirt-senior goalkeeper Russell Shealy to a career season. The Cartersville, Georgia native recorded 63 saves, 10 clean sheets and .61 goals against average on his way to second team All-ACC honors and ACC Tournament MVP.

The coaching staff also took advantage of the transfer portal in the offseason, picking up key attacking contributors Levonte Johnson, Nathan Opoku and Lorenzo Boselli. Johnson and Opoku both lead the team in goals, combining for 18 goals, 11 assists and 47 points. Both forwards earned first team All-ACC honors. Boselli has picked up major goals in the postseason, scoring against Virginia in the ACC Semifinal and Clemson in the ACC Final.

McIntyre and his staff look to clinch the program’s second trip to the College Cup on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 2 p.m., as the Orange play Vermont in the NCAA Championship Quarterfinals. Tickets start at $10 for the general public, $5 for senior and youth ages, and free for the first 500 Syracuse students with a valid SU ID. The match will also be streaming live on ESPN+.
