McElderry and Staff Named United Soccer Coaches North Region Staff of the Year

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers men’s soccer staff comprised of head coach Jim McElderry, associate head coach Gavin Wyse, associate head coach Tyler Stakiwicz and player development coach Joe Mortarulo, have been named the United Soccer Coaches North Region Staff of the Year. The organization made the announcement Friday afternoon.

The regional staff award is the first for the Scarlet Knights in program history.

McElderry and his staff led Rutgers to a historic season, earning its first Big Ten Championship in program history and first conference title since 1997. The team became the first men’s team at Rutgers and third team overall to win a Big Ten Championship since joining the conference. The victory punched Rutgers’ ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015.

The staff secured a 10-5-6 overall record, including a 4-2-2 mark in the Big Ten, to earn the No. 2 seed in the tournament, the highest in program history. The team hosted all three rounds of the conference tournament, bringing in record crowds including over 4,200+ fans for the title game.

The Scarlet Knights were also rewarded for the performance in the regular season, pulling in a program-best eight Big Ten All-Conference Awards in 2022. MD Myers led the pack as the unanimous Big Ten Player of the Year as well as an All-Big Ten First Team selection. Cole Cruthers was selected as the first Co-Freshman of the Year in the Big Ten era, as well as to the All-Freshman Team. This marks the first time in program history the Scarlet Knights have had two major award winners in the same season. Jason Bouregy and Hugo Le Guennec earned All-Big Ten Second Team honors while Ian Abbey and Ciaran Dalton were also picked to the All-Freshman squad.
