England have enjoyed their best results in decades under Gareth Southgate – but how does his managerial record stack up against the other coaches that have sat in the Three Lions dugout?
Southgate replaced Sam Allardyce in September 2016 and has helped transform the England squad and their fortunes in the last six years.
The 52-year-old led England to their first World Cup semi-final since Italia’ 90 in 2018, their first major tournament final since 1966 at Euro 2020, and now at Qatar 2022 will be hoping to go one step further still.
He’s received criticism in recent months, with some questioning his selection decisions and judging the playing style to have gone somewhat stale, but that’s all been forgotten following the excellent start England have made in Qatar. Whatever his shortcomings, he certainly seems to have a knack of getting England clicking when it really matters on the biggest stage – which is something very few of his predecessors can boast.
“The England part of my journey as a player and manager has probably been the greatest highlight and the greatest honour for me,” Southgate said in October, ahead of the 2022 World Cup. “I’m hoping this isn’t the end of it…I’m hoping there’s a few more years ahead.
“I still feel I’ve got a lot of improving to do and hopefully a lot of years ahead. But of course, there’s a lot in the next couple of months that we want to achieve as a start. Beyond that, I’m assuming life will continue and there are a lot of challenges ahead.”
We’ve ranked every England manager since 1946 by their win percentage. Note: We’ve not included managers who took charge of less than 10 England games. Sorry, Big Sam.
