Germany head coach Hansi Flick was extremely pleased with his side after they snatched a late draw against Spain at the World Cup.

Spain, meanwhile, started with a 7-0 thrashing of Costa Rica. Germany held them well as the two former world champions met on Sunday, however, in what was a closely contested affair.
La Roja pulled ahead through Alvaro Morata, but Germany managed to steal a point in the dying embers thanks to substitute Niclas Fullkrug’s powerful finish. Flick praised his side, but remained realistic, speaking after the game: “The team fought unconditionally. But we only took one step.
“We are a team. We have, even if it is to be read differently, a good togetherness,” he added: “It’s gigantic what the team has achieved. I am proud.”
“There are warriors on the pitch playing with hearts. If we take this momentum with us – and we get even more self-confidence – then a lot is possible.”
After falling behind, Germany were very seriously staring at yet another group stage exit, much lime the disappointment of 2018 where they went out early as the reigning champions.
While a point is still less ideal than three, especially considering they had chances to win the game, it stands them in good stead of reaching the last 16. They face Costa Rica in matchday three and must win to keep hopes alive, but also need Spain to see off Japan to help them progress.
