Florida State, North Carolina Advance to College Cup

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – For the 40th time in the 41 years the event has been held, the Atlantic Coast Conference has at least one team in the NCAA Women’s Soccer College Cup, as Florida State and North Carolina punched their tickets to Cary, North Carolina with shutout victories.

It marks the 17th consecutive year the ACC has had at least one team among the nation’s Final Four.

The ACC has 57 appearances in the College Cup – the most of any conference (the next-closest conference owns 27 appearances). Current membership combines for 69 appearances and 27 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championships. North Carolina owns 21 NCAA titles and Florida State owns three, while Notre Dame won three prior to joining the league in 2013.

The top-seeded Seminoles sealed their spot in Cary with a 1-0 victory over third-seeded Arkansas in Tallahassee, Saturday evening. The lone goal came in the 53rd minute when a corner kick was deflected in by a Razorback defender for an own goal. With the win, FSU will make its 13th appearance in the College Cup and fourth in the last five years.

The second-seeded Tar Heels went on the road and blanked ACC foe Notre Dame 2-0 in South Bend. Ally Sentnor scored in the 22nd minute and Talia Dellaperuta doubled North Carolina’s lead with a second-half insurance tally to put the match out of reach. With the victory, UNC will make its 31st appearance in the College Cup.

Florida State and North Carolina will now meet in the national semifinals on Friday, Dec. 2, at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina. Kickoff time is still TBA. This will be the third meeting of season between FSU and UNC, with the Tar Heels winning 2-1 in Tallahassee, before the Seminoles posted a 2-1 victory in the ACC Championship match in Cary.

Second-seeded Duke and third-seeded Virginia both fell in overtime in their respective quarterfinal matches. On Friday, the Blue Devils fell at No. 1 seeded Alabama, 3-2, while the Cavaliers were defeated by No. 1 seed UCLA 2-1.
