Pitt Earns At-Large Bid To 2022 NCAA Championship; Hosts Cleveland State Thursday Night


PITTSBURGH – The Pitt men’s soccer team earned a trip to the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship for the fourth consecutive season, as announced by the NCAA Monday afternoon. The Panthers were selected as an at-large team for the upcoming tournament.

Pitt will host Cleveland State in the opening round of the tournament on Thursday night at 7pm at Ambrose Urbanic Field. The Vikings won the 2022 Horizon League Tournament and earned an automatic qualifying bid after posting a 11-3-5 overall record.

Pitt finished the regular season with an overall record of 8-4-5 while posting a 3-2-3 ACC mark. The Panthers advanced to the ACC Quarterfinals with a home win over NC State, marking their fifth straight season advancing on in the conference tournament.

 

The Panthers have been dominant at home since 2019 as they are 30-4-5 including a 6-1-4 mark at Ambrose Urbanic Field this season. Pitt is 3-0 all-time at home in the NCAA Tournament including a pair of victories last season over Northern Illinois and Hofstra.

 

Pitt placed a total of five players on ACC All-Conference teams, including two on the first team, two on the second team, and one on the freshman team. Junior Filip Mirkovic earned first team honors for the first time in his career as he led Pitt in scoring (18 points) while also leading the ACC and ranking fourth in the NCAA in assists (12). Valentin Noel earned first team honors for the second time as he led Pitt in goals (7) and ranked second in points (17).

 

Bertin Jacquesson was placed on the second team after netting five goals and three assists while Jackson Walti earned his third straight second team nod after chipping in with a career-high two goals and logging a team-high 1,536 minutes. Jackson Gilman was tabbed to the All-Freshman squad after earning 17 starts on the backline for Pitt and netting a pair of assists.
