Orange Earn NCAA Tourney #3 Seed, First-Round Bye

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Syracuse has earned a program-best No. 3 seed in the 2022 NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament and will have a first-round bye. The Orange will face the winner between Penn and Rutgers in the second round on Sunday, November 20 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange will host all NCAA Tournament games as long as they continue up to the College Cup.

The Orange earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after winning the ACC Championship on Sunday, defeating defending national champion Clemson, 2-0. Syracuse will make its eighth appearance in the NCAA Tournament and seventh under the direction of head coach Ian McIntyre.

Syracuse’s No. 3 seed is the highest in program history, improving on the Orange’s No. 6 seed in 2015 when the squad advanced to the College Cup. Syracuse enters tournament play with a 14-2-4 record.

The Orange offense is led by first-team All-ACC selections Levonte Johnson and Nathan Opoku, who have both have scored eight goals this season. Goalkeeper Russell Shealy, the ACC Tournament MVP, has recorded a career-high 58 saves and has a 0.62 goals-against average. He has nine shutouts this season.

Penn (12-2-2) earned an automatic bid to the tournament by winning the Ivy League regular-season title with a 6-1 league record. Rutgers (10-4-6) defeated Indiana to claim its first Big Ten Championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Quakers will host Thursday’s first-round match against the Scarlet Knights.

The Orange have faced Rutgers 21 times, with the series split 10-10-1. The squads last played in 2015. Syracuse and Penn have played just once on the soccer pitch and that match took place in 1921.

The third round will take place on campuses of the higher seed on Saturday, Nov. 26 and Sunday, Nov. 27. The quarterfinals are set for Friday, Dec. 2 and Saturday, Dec. 3. The College Cup will take place Dec. 9 and 12 in Cary, N.C.
