Men’s Soccer Earns NCAA Tournament At-Large Berth

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina men’s soccer team will make its 29th NCAA postseason appearance after receiving an at-large bid into the 2022 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship, as announced by the selection committee Monday afternoon.

The Tar Heels (8-5-5) are set to host High Point (10-4-5) in the first round on Nov. 17 at Dorrance Field. The winner will advance to the second round on Nov. 20 to face No. 5 Stanford (11-2-5) in Stanford, Calif.

Carolina continues a longstanding tradition of NCAA Championship soccer, making the bracket for the 29th time overall and 14th time in the last 15 years. Head coach Carlos Somoano, now in his 12th year at the helm, has guided 11 of his squads to a postseason berth.

UNC’s overall record in the tournament is 42-23-10, including a 9-4-1 mark in the first round. In 2021, the Tar Heels advanced to the second round after defeating Loyola Maryland, 4-2, on penalty kicks.

The 62nd NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship provides for a field of 48 teams to compete in a single-elimination tournament. Twenty-three conference champions qualify automatically and the balance of the field is selected at-large by the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Committee. The teams will be seeded so that 16 of the 48 teams will receive a first-round bye and automatically advance to the second round.

Following first round matches on Nov. 17, second round contests are slated for Nov. 20. Teams that advance will participate in the third round on Nov. 26-27 with quarterfinals set for Dec. 2-3. All first, second, third and quarterfinal contests will be held at campus sites.

The College Cup will be held at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C., with the semifinals being held on Dec. 9 and the national championship game taking place on Dec. 12.
