Liverpool told of ‘red flag’ that will put them off ‘devastating’ long-term transfer target

Liverpool-linked Doku

Liverpool have been warned against making a move for Rennes winger Jeremy Doku even though he can be “devastating” when at his best.

Doku is only 20 years old but he has already been able to make quite an impact in senior football.

No more so than during last year’s European Championships when he put in a couple of eye-catching performances for Belgium.

The winger has already received a lot of praise. Last year, PSG star Kylian Mbappe recognised Doku’s talents.

“Recently, I was speaking with my father about a player who impressed me because of his speed qualities, that is Doku, at Rennes,” Mbappe said in June 2021.

“In 5 years as a professional, I have never seen someone from a standing start demonstrate so much power.”

Jurgen Klopp is still understood to be an admirer of Doku, though. Last month it was claimed that Liverpool ‘will return’ for him as the German manager has ‘never stopped thinking about him’.

But journalist Robin Bairner thinks Doku’s injury record “has to be a red flag for a team like Liverpool”.

“The trouble with Jeremy Doku isn’t necessarily his talent. We’ve seen, particularly in the European Championships, just how good a winger he can be. He was devastating for Belgium against Italy,” Bairner told GiveMeSport.

“But his issue has just consistently been, since he moved to Rennes, staying fit. Again, he’s just been injured, he’s just coming back from injury now. It seems to be a repeating cycle with him.

“He’ll come back for two or three games then find himself injured for two or three months, and he doesn’t really get any consistency in his performances.

“I think that has to be a red flag for a team like Liverpool who are generally so strong in the transfer market, who pick up players who have got a strong mentality, who don’t get injured and can fit into their team straightaway.

“Of course, this season, Liverpool have been beset by injury problems. You’re…
