Graham Potter thinks Arsenal “deserved to win” against his Chelsea side on Sunday with the Blues missing a number of key ingredients.
Gabriel Magalhaes scored the only goal of the game on 63 minutes as the Gunners regained their spot at the top of the Premier League with a 1-0 win after Manchester City played yesterday.
The defeat was Potter’s second as manager of Chelsea and that’s now back-to-back Premier League defeats after their humiliating 4-1 loss at Brighton last weekend.
Chelsea boss Potter told reporters after the match: “We played against a team in a really good moment, a confident team, so credit to them. The boys gave everything. We got into a few situations in the box but we missed that last little bit.
“Overall, Arsenal deserved to win. The goal is disappointing and over the course of the game, we don’t have too many complaints at the result.
“We have to look at where the two teams are at, Arsenal are in a good moment, and have worked together for a long time and we’re in different phase. We tried to make it more of a London derby.
“We lacked quality, but the effort was there and we were beaten by the better team today. It was not a great goal from our perspective, we defended those moments quite well.
“We didn’t function as fluently as we would like. There are always two teams on the pitch, and you have to understand where they’re from, and look at where they are at.”
On Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount looking tired, Potter added: “We looked at the game from a training perspective and Mason likes to be playing games. Always, you can reflect after the game and make a different decision.”
On not creating enough chances, Potter continued: “There are two teams on the pitch and Arsenal defend well and press well. That’s what the top teams do and Arsenal at the moment are a top team. I don’t like to say that but it’s the reality.
“We had opportunities of three-vs-three and four-vs-four but we lacked that final pass. If we look how we build our attacks, we’re not quite where I’d like us to be.”
On whether the World Cup is coming at a good time, Potter replied: “We’ve had a bit of a perfect storm in terms of lots of games and injuries along the way. We have to focus on how we can improve the team and as you can see today, there is a lot of work today.”
