Gerard Pique’s best games for Barcelona

Gerard Pique

Gerard Pique will forever be remembered as one of the greatest centre-backs to ever grace the game of football.

While recent years weren’t always kind to the Spaniard, Pique has built up a vault full of glorious moments and superhuman performances to earn his rightful place in the pantheon of all-time greats.

Ahead of his final-ever game, here’s a look back at some of his best in a Barcelona shirt.

One of the biggest results in Barcelona history, Pique and his teammates rocked up to the Santiago Bernabeu in May 2009 and ran away with an enormous 6-2 victory.

Up against a forward line made up of Gonzalo Higuain, Raul and Arjen Robben, Barcelona didn’t have things their own way early on but a tactical tweak from Pep Guardiola – moving Lionel Messi to a false-nine role – saw the Blaugrana take control of proceedings.

In the end, Pique would create one of the most iconic images in Clasico history as he went bombing forward in open play and slotted home the final goal, stretching his shirt out and screaming into the rival crowd as he scored his first La Liga goal.

Jose Mourinho’s Real side actually came into the game as favourites but they were expertly downed by Pique and Barcelona.

An icon at Barcelona, Pique was widely heralded as a flop for his brief spell with Manchester United, so the chance to exact some revenge on the Red Devils in the 2009 Champions League final was too good to pass up on.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side had hopes of becoming the first team to retain the trophy, and with an attack featuring Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, who could blame them?

Pique was in no mood to roll out the red carpet, however, and was part of an expert team performance that neutralised the defending champions and sent a stark reminder to the United faithful of what he was really about.

Juventus eliminated reigning European champions Real Madrid from the 2014/15 Champions League and were many neutrals’ favourites to win the whole thing when they came up against Barcelona in the final.
