COLLEGE PARK, MD — Colin Griffith scored the match’s lone goal in the 76th minute to send the No. 7 Terps to the Big Ten Tournament Semifinals with a 1-0 victory over the Northwestern Wildcats.
With the win, the Terps, the top seeded team in the tournament, will host fourth-seeded Indiana in a semifinal matchup. That match will take place at Ludwig Field on Wednesday and it will air on Big Ten Network. The Hoosiers defeated Penn State 1-0 earlier in the evening to make it to the semifinals.
The match was deadlocked at zero through the first 76 minutes of play until Griffith ended the scoreless tie. The two sides were relatively even through the first 45 minutes of action, but the Terps came out of halftime with constant offensive pressure and produced scoring chance after scoring chance. That attack finally paid off in the 76th minute as Griffith chased down a cross from Malcolm Johnston and was able to just get a touch on it to send the Terps to victory.
The Maryland defense was stout all game, but particularly in the second half where the Wildcats were held without a shot. Niklas Neumann notched three saves and recorded his second shutout of the season.
The Terps were also able to avenge their loss to the Wildcats in the first round of last year’s Big Ten Tournament at Ludwig Field. That year, the Wildcats advanced in a penalty kick shootout after a 0-0 draw.
