Bears Earn 1-1 Draw With Cardinal

BERKELEY – California women’s soccer earned a 1-1 tie with Stanford in the regular season finale, extending the team’s unbeaten streak to five. With a 5-3-3 record against conference opponents, Cal now ranks fourth in the Pac-12, the team’s first time breaking into the top-four since 2015.

It was a close game between the Bears and the Cardinal at Edwards Stadium, with the two teams gridlocked at 0-0 as they entered the halfway point. Keely Roy had the first opportunity of the match, taking a shot that went out the top of the goal in the first minute-and-a-half.

Karlie Lema then took two beautiful shots on target, both saved by Stanford’s keeper Ryan Campbell, before the Cardinal got their first opportunity in minute 9, a shot which was blocked by Sydney Collins in a massive defensive save.

Cal keeper Angelina Anderson made a crucial save on a ball sent to the bottom right of her net in the 44th minute to keep the game scoreless at the intermission.

The game intensified as the second half got underway, but no shots were taken by either team until Mia Fontana created an opportunity at the net in the 50th minute. Fontana’s shot went just out to the right of the goal and the score remained 0-0.

Stanford scored a goal in the 59th minute to take the lead, but it didn’t take long for Cal to answer back with a goal of its own to equalize the game. Roy sent a corner kick to the front of the net in minute 73, and a scramble for possession ensued. Lema got the touch that sent the ball past the Cardinal’s keeper and into the netting to put Cal on the board. It was Lema’s fifth goal of the 2022 season.

The two teams shared the possession and opportunities for the remainder of the match, but eventually settled for a 1-1 draw. Cal logged more shots than Stanford with its 18 total and eight on-target. The Cardinal took 13 shots, three of which were shots on-goal. Lema was Cal’s leader with her six attempts.

With Friday’s draw with Stanford, the Bears now close out the regular season with a 10-4-6 overall record and a 5-3-3 record against Pac-12 opponents. Cal now waits to see if its season continues at the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, Nov. 7. The show will be streamed live on NCAA.com at 1 p.m. PT.
