Sergio Ramos & Gerard Pique set to be left out of Spain's final World Cup squad

Sergio Ramos and Gerard Pique are both set to be left out of Spain’s final squad for the upcoming World Cup.

Pique hasn’t played for his country since they were knocked out in the last 16 of the 2018 FIFA World Cup by Russia, while Ramos hasn’t done so since early last year.

Despite that, both veteran defenders have been included in Luis Enrique’s 55-man preliminary World Cup squad, and some believe the manager could take at least one of them to add some experience to what is a fairly young squad.

Ramos in particular has looked to be in with a good chance of going to Qatar with his country after performing well for PSG in recent times. However, according to Marca, neither player is to make the final cut with both being part of the unlucky 29 that are to be dropped.

The Spanish publication states that Enrique doesn’t want any one player to be the centre of attention or challenge his authority and so is set to leave both at home.

Instead, the central defenders he will be taking to the World Cup will be Eric Garcia, Aymeric Laporte, Inigo Martinez and Pau Torres – with the former two most likely to start.

Ramos would be in contention to be called up if any of them picked up injured, but Pique most likely wouldn’t given that he hasn’t played much for Barcelona this season and hasn’t impressed when he has been on the pitch, with Diego Llorente and Hugo Guillamon probably above him in the pecking order.
