Takuma Suzuki Named ACC Defensive Player of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Wake Forest men’s soccer senior Takuma Suzuki has been named ACC Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.

After being honored ahead of last Friday’s match as part of the program’s Senior Day festivities, Suzuki helped lead the Demon Deacons to a 3-0 win over No. 9 Louisville to secure a first round bye in the 2022 ACC Tournament.

Suzuki and the Demon Deacons held Louisville to just two shots on goal as the Cardinals were shut out for the first time this season. The clean sheet was also Wake Forest’s seventh this season and third against a conference foe.

Offensively, the Peachtree City, Ga., native also recorded an assist on Wake Forest’s third score, getting a head on a corner kick from fellow senior Omar Hernandez before sophomore Leo Guarino’s bicycle kick goal sealed the three-goal victory.

It is the first career ACC Player of the Week honor for Suzuki as he becomes the fourth Demon Deacon to earn conference accolades this season, joining Roald Mitchell (ACC Offensive Player of the Week, Sept. 13), Garrison Tubbs (ACC Defensive Player of the Week, Sept. 13) and Prince Amponsah (ACC Defensive Player of the Week, Sept. 6).

Additionally, he becomes the 16th ACC Defensive Player of the Week selection under head coach Bobby Muuss

Wake Forest will return to the pitch on Sunday afternoon, hosting an ACC Tournament quarterfinal showdown with the winner of Wednesday night’s first round match between Louisville and Virginia.

Kick-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the match will air nationally on the ACC Network. Tickets are available starting at $5 here
