Chivas announce Veljko Paunovic as new head coach

Chivas de Guadalajara announced Veljko Paunovic as the team’s newest head coach, joining ahead of the 2023 Liga MX Clausura. He replaces Roberto Cardea, who left after the Chivas’ elimination from the 2022 Apertura repechaje.

“We wish Veljko Paunovic every success with our team, hoping for a smooth run and results to come soon,” the team said in a statement.

Paunovic arrives with extensive experience, having coached Serian youth teams, Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire and England’s Reading in the Second Division. He stands as the first appointment of new Sporting Director Ricardo Pelaez.

Prior to naming Paunovic for the job, Pelaez revealed he wanted a head coach with mentality and knowledge of European football.

“He must be young, who knows, who has a mentality that has trained in the big leagues in Europe,” Hierro said of the search upon his appointment. “People are calm that we are trying to bring someone with a young profile who knows how to work with young people, who knows the area and the mentality of Mexican soccer and that he has trained in Europe.”

The team now has their man in Paunovic.

Chivas will now kick off their preseason stint, which was previously altered by having no manager present.
