How Bayern Munich are profiting from Robert Lewandowski's Barcelona goals

Barcelona paid an initial €45m to bring Robert Lewandowski to the Nou Camp this summer – but as part of that deal are set to continue paying Bayern Munich for the Polish striker for some time.

Lewandowski joined Barca after eight years with the German champions and has already made a major contribution to his new side’s fortunes, scoring 17 in goals in just 16 appearances so far.

But according to German publication Bild, the Catalan giants are contractually obligated to pay Bayern another €1.25m for each season in which Lewandowski scores 25 goals. Over the course of his four-year contract that is potentially another €5m in Bayern’s pockets by 2026.

It already looks more than likely that the Polish dynamo will reach that figure this season, and with his prodigious goalscoring ability there is every chance he will achieve it in the years to come as well.

The news comes during a week in which Barcelona were knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage for the second year in a row, creating more financial uncertainty around the club after they activated ‘economic levers’ in order to fund a wild summer spending spree.

In addition to Lewandowski, the club signed Jules Kounde, Raphinha, Franck Kessie, Marcos Alonso and others as manager Xavi seeks to build a side capable of challenging for the league title and European honours once again.

Lewandowski is currently the top scorer in La Liga and has scored considerably more goals than any other Barca player, with second-placed Ousmane Dembele sitting on just four goals.

La Blaugrana travel to Valencia on Saturday evening, looking to keep up the pressure on league leaders Real Madrid.
