Women's Soccer Goes For Regular Season Crown At Louisville


LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Second-ranked North Carolina will look to gain at least a share of the 2022 ACC regular season championship Thursday night as the Tar Heels travel to the Bluegrass State to take on Louisville at 6 p.m.

Carolina is currently tied with Florida State and Notre Dame atop the ACC standings with 21 points. FSU closes out the regular season Thursday night at home against Virginia Tech, while Notre Dame travels to Duke. UNC and Notre Dame each beat the Seminoles during the regular season, but did not play each other.

North Carolina has won 24 ACC regular season championships (22 outright, two shared). UNC claimed its last outright championship in 2019 before sharing the title with Florida State in 2020.

The Tar Heels enter the match on a five-game winning streak following its road trip sweep through the Sunshine State with wins over No. 4 Florida State and Miami. Carolina is 6-1 on the road this season with its only blemish coming at Virginia Tech.

During its current five-game winning streak, North Carolina has outscored its opponents 13-1 with four shutouts. The Tar Heels have out-shot their opposition 89-34, with half of the shots allowed taken by Florida State (17).

Louisville is 6-7-2 overall this season with a 3-6 record in ACC play following its 4-0 loss at Duke a week ago. Maisie Whitsett leads the Cardinals with four goals this season.

 

GAME WINNERS | Redshirt freshman Ally Sentnor scored the game-winning goal in each of the Tar Heels’ victories last week over Florida State and Miami, and is tied with Avery Patterson for the team lead with three. Sentnor was named ACC co-Offensive Player of the Week as was also named to the topdrawersoccer.com Team of the Week for her efforts.

LAST MEETING | After playing a scoreless first half, UNC and Louisville combined for four second half goals and the Tar Heels came away with a 3-1 victory road over the Cardinals in 2020. Both teams found their offense at halftime as three combined goals flooded the scoresheet in the first eight minutes of the second half. Louisville took an initial 1-0 lead at the 49th minute, but Rachel Jones scored just one minute later to tie up the game.
