ACC Announces Men’s Soccer Player of Week Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia sophomore forward Leo Afonso was named Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Louisville defender Josh Jones and NC State goalkeeper Lucas Hatsios shared ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Afonso scored the game-winning goal in Virginia’s 1-0 victory over No. 25 Wake Forest to put the Cavaliers on top of the ACC Coastal Division standings. A native of San Paulo, Brazil, Afonso recorded his sixth goal of the season, which ties Kome Ubogu for the team lead. Virginia is unbeaten this season when Afonso scores, posting a record of 6-0 in those matches. Afonso’s goal was his fourth game-winner of the season – the second-highest total in the ACC.

Hatsios made a career-high eight saves Saturday against No. 4 Syracuse to help secure the Wolfpack’s 1-1 draw. The one goal allowed against Syracuse came on an own goal. The Charlotte, North Carolina, native also made three saves in the Pack’s 2-1 win over William & Mary, with all three of those coming after the Tribe’s first goal to prevent the team from capitalizing again and to set the Wolfpack up for the late game-winner.

A native of Hatfield, Pennsylvania, Jones helped Louisville to a 1-0-1 week, as the Cardinals’ defense allowed just one goal and three shots on goal in 180 minutes in matches against ETSU and Clemson. Jones also scored the game-winning goal in the 59th minute of the 1-0 victory over Clemson on Friday night. Hatfield and the Cardinals recorded their sixth shutout of the season and third in conference play.

Non-conference play for the regular season concludes Tuesday with a trio of matches, including a 7 p.m. contest between Michigan and Notre Dame that will be featured on ACC Network. The regular season ends Friday with a full slate of league games, including No. 2 Duke at Virginia Tech (6 p.m.) and No. 11 Louisville at No. 25 Wake Forest (8 p.m.) on ACCN. Four games will be broadcast at 7 p.m. on ACCNX: No. 24 Virginia at North Carolina, NC State at Clemson, Notre Dame at Pitt and Boston College at No. 4 Syracuse.

The 2022 ACC Men’s Soccer Championship opens on Wednesday, Nov. 2, with four first-round matches at campus sites.
