Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez has played down Gavi’s injury that forced him out early in Sunday’s 4-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in La Liga.

Gavi appeared in pain after hurting his groin and went off in the 33rd minute with the Blaugrana up 3-0 at the time.

The early substitution prompted injury fears, particularly for the Spain international ahead of the World Cup next month.

The 18-year-old re-appeared after the game to shake hands with his opponents in a positive sign after his initial look of concern.

“Gavi’s injury seems to be nothing serious,” Xavi told reporters. “Gavi will be fine for Wednesday.

But Xavi had a more bleak outlook for Sergi Roberto who suffered a left shoulder dislocation.

“We will lose Sergi for a few days, we will see the tests tomorrow,” Xavi said.

Barca had to play the final part of the game with 10 men after Sergi Roberto was forced off in the 85th minute.

Xavi also hailed Ousmane Dembele who scored once and provided three assists in an enterprising display.

“He was in the spotlight because he takes risks and it’s like a flip of a coin. He was especially motivated,” Xavi told Movistar.

“He understood everything well. He’s here to make a difference and he’s capable of doing these things.”
