KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – No. 18 Tennessee dropped a game in Regal Stadium on Sunday, falling to No. 21 South Carolina, 6-1.

Redshirt-junior Giselle Washington was the goal-scorer for Tennessee (10-4-2, 6-2-1 SEC), and senior Lindsey Romig recorded four saves in the net.

Shae O’Rourke and Corrina Zullo turned in braces for South Carolina (10-3-4, 5-3-1 SEC), while Payton Patrick and Claire Griffiths rounded out the scoring. In goal, Heather Hinz logged seven saves on the day.

“We talked about it all year – it is both boxes, and we were not good enough in either of them today. Our mentality and our competitive fight was not good enough in either box, and that was the difference in the game,” said Tennessee head coach Joe Kirt.

“If you look at the midfield and the overall stats, it was a pretty even game… our mentality was not good enough; we were not ready to compete well enough in both boxes. We did a lot of good things outside of that; we created a ton of chances against a really good team, but we did not have enough quality in our attacking box, and we were not tough enough in our defensive box.”

The game started off as a back-and-forth affair with both team getting off two shots in the opening minutes, but around the 18-minute mark, UT fired off three quick shots to go up 5-2 in the shot count with four of those being on frame.

Taylor Huff found Jaida Thomas breaking into the box in the in the 18th minute, and she put the ball on frame, but Hinz came off her line to make the diving save. Thomas got another opportunity 20 second later, but it skipped over the crossbar, and a minute after that, Jordan Fusco got loose in the box and blasted one low at the middle of the net, but Hinz collected the save.

South Carolina’s first goal came in the 27th minute after Romig made an excellent stop on a shot from Catherine Barry and Patrick collected the rebound and served it to Griffiths who ran onto it at the top of the box and netted it far post.

A minute and a half later, O’Rourke added a second, having her first shot blocked but slotting her second attempt into the side net from eight yards out.

The Gamecocks’ third and final goal of the half came in the 30th minute when Patrick ran onto a ball that ricocheted off the right goalpost, and she buried it in the back of the net.

Sydney Hennessey had a chance to get UT on the board in the final seconds of the half when she got off a clean shot…
