Mahrt’s brace secures 4-1 win against Nebraska

MADISON, Wis. – Paced by a pair of goals from Aryssa Mahrt, the Wisconsin women’s soccer team overpowered Nebraska, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at McClimon Field in the regular season finale.

Aryssa Mahrt scored twice in the second half, while Ashley Martinez and Natalie Viggiano also found the back of the net.

The visitors were coming off of a big upset against No. 24 Penn State and carried that momentum into this game. Just 30 seconds into the match the Cornhuskers were granted a free kick far outside the box. However, after an unlucky bounce the ball found its way in the back of the net untouched. The Badgers then went down early but not for long.

Shortly after the Nebraska goal, Wisconsin’s Rylee Howard sent in a cross from the left side of the 18 to find Martinez unmarked in front of goal. Martinez used her head to flick the ball to the bottom right corner of the net for her first career goal.

At the 35-minute mark, Claire Odmark intercepted a Nebraska pass to take the ball up field and find Viggiano outside the box. Viggiano dribbled with the ball through a pair of defenders to put up a rocket from distance.

The Badgers went into the half up by one with a score of 2-1, however, things heated up quickly for the home team. In the 58th minute, Mahrt received a pass from Maia Richters on the left side of the box where she sliced and diced around a Nebraska defender to get the opponent to step the wrong way, where Mahrt then shot a missile into the top left corner to extend the Badgers lead.
