Cougars, Wildcats Battle to Scoreless Sunday Draw

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State women’s soccer team (8-4-4, 2-3-3) tied the Arizona Wildcats, 0-0, Sunday afternoon at Lower Soccer Field to conclude a three-match homestand. The Cougars finished with 17 shots to the Wildcats’ eight, and WSU sophomore goalkeeper Nadia Cooper made three saves to earn her 12th career shutout.
 
About 20 minutes into the match, with both sides settling in to a physical battle, Grayson Lynch gave the Cougars their best look of the first half. The senior forward found the ball at her feet following a goal mouth scramble, turned and shot from inside the 6-yard box, but Arizona goalkeeper Hope Hisey was well-positioned for the save.
 
Just five minutes later, Lynch was involved in another Cougar scoring opportunity when she delivered a short cross in from the left endline. Senior Brianna McReynolds made a run at the near post to meet the ball and flick a first-time shot at the near post. Once again, the Wildcats’ Hisey was there for the save to keep the match scoreless.
 
With 10 minutes remaining in the opening half, McReynolds had another look at goal after dispossessing an Arizona defender at the top of the box. McReynolds dribbled at the Arizona ‘keeper one-on-one before slipping a square ball across the 6-yard box towards a streaking Margie Detrizio. Detrizio was a half-step behind the ball, which rolled out the endline beyond the far post.
