Cal Ties Oregon On Late Roy PK

Colorado

EUGENE, Ore.  – Keely Roy scored on an 83rd-minute penalty kick to give the California women’s soccer team a 1-1 tie with Oregon on Sunday on Papé Field.

The Golden Bears’ record stands at 9-4-4 (4-3-1 in the Pac-12), while the Ducks are 4-6-6 (2-4-2 Pac-12).

Cal dominated the game in shots (24-5), corner kicks (14-2) and possession but needed the late equalizer after Oregon’s Kess Elmore scored in the fourth minute. The Bears outshot the Ducks 10-1 in the first half and 14-4 in the final 45 minutes, but Oregon goalkeeper Leah Freeman made seven saves to keep Cal at bay for most of the match.

The Bears kept the pressure on and at one point produced four consecutive corner kicks, culminating on a Kailee Gifford shot that went just wide in the 66th minute.

In the 72nd minute, Oregon’s Chai Cortez picked up her second yellow card and was red carded, and the Bears played 11 vs. 10 the rest of the way.

In the 83rd minute, Ayo Oke dribbled deep into the Ducks’ box and was fouled, resulting in the PK. Roy stuck the ball in the upper corner for the equalizer.

Cal outshot Oregon 4-0 in the final minutes but settled for the 1-1 draw.

For their next game, the Bears return to Edwards Stadium to host Colorado in another Pac-12 Conference clash on Thursday at 12 p.m.
