State Makes Final Regular Season Road Trip, Travels to Vanderbilt


NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Mississippi State soccer program heads to the Music City for a contest with the Vanderbilt Commodores (10-2-3, 4-2-2 SEC). The Sunday afternoon (Oct. 23) match will kickoff at 3 p.m. CT and will air on SEC Network.
 
The Bulldogs enter the contest at No. 25 in the most recent Top Drawer Soccer weekly rankings.
 
“We are looking forward to the opportunity to play another quality opponent on Sunday,” head coach James Armstrong said. “We are looking to apply the lessons learned from Thursday night and we know we’ll have to show improvement in certain areas to get the result we are looking for.”
 
MSU is gearing up for its last road trip of the regular season. Heading into the Vandy match, State has only lost one of its six total contests. The Bulldogs have tallied a total of seven goals while on the road and have logged five shutouts.
 
Vanderbilt, meanwhile, is coming off a 5-2 win at Florida. The Commodores scored its opening two goals in a three-minute span. In the win, Vanderbilt outshot Florida, 14-4, and limited the Gators to only one shot on goal.
 

L, 1-4 vs. No. 3/1 Alabama
For only the third time all season, MSU came up short against its opponent, falling 4-1 to Alabama. Freshman Alivia Buxton tallied her third assist of the season and Haley McWhirter scored for the sixth time. Despite the loss, State became only the seventh team this season to score a goal in the first half over Alabamam and only the fifth team to limit the Crimson Tide to one goal or fewer in the opening frame.
 

For the fifth-straight week, MSU finds itself ranked by Top Drawer Soccer. The Dawgs sit at No. 25 for the second week in a row. For her performance at Ole Miss, McWhirter was recently named to Top Drawer’s Team of the Week as an honorable mention. Maggie Wadsworth (No. 9) and Buxton (No. 63) have also earned recognition from the organization, as both Bulldogs are currently ranked in the top-100 freshmen rankings.
 

The 22 goals this season is the seventh-most through 15 matches in program history and is the 8th time that State has tallied 22 or more goals during the same stretch.
