Karim Benzema ruled out of Real Madrid vs Sevilla

Real Madrid have confirmed that newly-crowned Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema will miss this weekend’s clash with Sevilla with the Frenchman suffering from muscle fatigue.

The 34-year-old has scored five goals in his first seven La Liga games but will sit out Los Blancos’ next fixture, as well as next week’s Champions League clash with RB Leipzig.

A statement issued by Real Madrid said: “After the tests carried out today on our player Karim Benzema by the Real Madrid Medical Services, muscle fatigue has been detected in the quadriceps of his left leg.”

The club now hopes to have Benzema fit and firing for their next La Liga match, at home against Girona on October 30.

The absence of Benzema raises questions over who will slot in as the central striker for Carlo Ancelotti’s side against Sevilla. The most likely candidate would be Rodrygo, who has impressed on the right wing this season and scored the final goal in last week’s Clasico win over Barcelona.

Other options for Ancelotti would be Eden Hazard and Marco Asensio. However, Rodrygo’s form and status as a favourite of Ancelotti makes him the most obvious choice to replace Benzema.

Madrid are currently top of La Liga, with the 3-1 win over Barcelona taking them three points clear of their rivals and making them the only unbeaten side left in the division. They host a Sevilla side currently languishing in mid-table, having recently sacked manager Julen Lopetegui.
