Kaloukian’s Goal Not Enough as Michigan Comes Up Short Against Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Despite another goal from freshman Nicholas Kaloukian, the University of Michigan men’s soccer team was defeated 2-1 by Rutgers in a Big Ten Conference match Friday evening (Oct. 21) at Yurcak Field.

The Wolverines outshot the Scarlet Knights 11-7 and had four shots on goal but ultimately were unable to come away with the win.

Kaloukian scored for the third straight game with assists from Declan Gaffney and Brennan Callow.

Rutgers (7-2-5, 3-2-2 Big Ten) netted the first goal of the contest in the 15th minute, but Michigan (4-8-3, 1-5-1 Big Ten) quickly responded when it got a throw in outside the 18-yard box. Gaffney launched the ball into the box and it bounced off the head of Callow and allowed Kaloukian to head the ball down and in to knot the match at 1 in the 17th minute.

The Wolverines looked to tally a go-ahead goal with a shot on frame from Bryce Blevins in the 22nd minute, but headed into the locker room tied at 1 after 45 minutes. U-M outshot Rutgers 6-4 in the first half with two shots on goal.

The Scarlet Knights took their second lead of the match eight minutes into the second half. Michigan tried to respond on its counter attack as Michael Leon flipped a shot off the crossbar that went out of bounds for a goal kick.
