Sjoberg Named ACC Defensive Player of the Week

Senior center-back Buster Sjoberg is the Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week. The Swedish defender is the fifth Syracuse men’s soccer student-athlete to receive an honor from the ACC. Defender Christian Curti (8/30), forward Levonte Johnson (9/20), goalkeeper Russell Shealy (9/20 and 10/4) and midfielder Jeorgio Kocevski (10/11) were also recognized by the ACC office earlier this season. No other school in the ACC has had five different men’s soccer student-athletes earn the Player of the Week award in the 2022 season.

Sjoberg didn’t miss a second in Syracuse’s two victories the past week. The Uppsala, Sweden native was stellar against Loyola in a 6-1 victory on Tuesday, Oct. 10. He was also instrumental in the Orange’s pivotal 2-1 road win over No. 11 Louisville. After ‘Cuse went down to ten-men in the 77th minute, Sjoberg stepped up to prevent a late Cardinal rally with disciplined defensive play.

A second-year starter, Sjoberg has appeared in 30 matches in Syracuse career, starting in each appearance. Prior to joining the Orange, Sjoberg was a member of Wofford’s men’s soccer program. He has 56 starts in his cumulative collegiate career, scoring three goals and tallying one assists.

Sjoberg and the Orange have just three matches left in the regular season. Syracuse takes on Bucknell on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. before traveling to NC State on Saturday, Oct. 22.

There are currently five fall sports teams ranked on Syracuse’s campus, the most teams concurrently ranked in the fall in school history. Field hockey (No. 12), football (No. 14) women’s cross country (No. 15) and men’s cross country (No. 16) are the other four teams ranked beside the men’s soccer program.
