Virginia Tech ties No. 13 Virginia 3-3 in the final minute


BLACKSBURG — Virginia Tech recorded a pair of goals from Taylor Bryan late in the second half resulting in a 3-3 draw against Virginia on Thursday, Oct. 13 at Thompson Field.

The tie moved Virginia Tech’s overall record to 9-4-2 and 3-3-1 in ACC play. Tech remains unbeaten in the ACC against top-25 opponents. 

How it Happened

The energy was live and well at Thompson Field as Virginia Tech took a 1-0 lead over Virginia (10-2-3, 3-2-2). Taylor Price recorded her eighth goal of the season in the 31st minute with a header into the back of the net, assisted by Emmalee McCarter from the corner kick. Price’s goal marks the sixth time this season she has scored the first Hokies’ goal. 

The Cavaliers responded to tie the game in the 50th minute with a goal from Jill Flammia. Virginia then broke the 1-1 draw thirteen seconds later on a goal from Haley Hopkins. The Cavaliers pulled further ahead 3-1 with a 59th minute goal from their lead goal scorer, Hopkins, her second goal of the night. 

Virginia Tech fought hard until the end, narrowing the gap to 3-2 on Taylor Bryan’s third goal of the season in the 80th minute, assisted by Tori Powell and Emma Pelkowski.  With less than a minute to go, the Hokies leveled the match 3-3 thanks to the equalizer from Bryan at 89:19. 

“I’m proud of the team tonight for the way we came back, 3-1 down,” said head coach Chugger Adair. “It was a tremendous comeback from our ladies and I am pleased with the overall effort of the team to earn the point.”

  • Tech remains unbeaten by ACC schools ranked within the top-25 
  • Taylor Price scored her eighth goal of the season. 
  • Lauren Hargrove piled up three saves for the Hokies out of 13 total Cavaliers shots.
  • Virginia Tech tied Virginia with both teams registering six shots on goal
