Dawgs Keep Possession of Magnolia Cup for Third Straight Year

Alabama

OXFORD – For the third-straight season, the Mississippi State soccer program retained possession of the Magnolia Cup Thursday night in Oxford.

The 1-0 victory over in-state rival Ole Miss is the tenth win of the season for State. It’s also the tenth shutout of the 2022 campaign which is the most by a team in a single season in program history.

“The effort that the entire team put in tonight was absolutely incredible,” head coach James Armstrong said. “They faced adversity head on and we couldn’t be more proud to bring the cup back to Starkville. Special thanks, as well, to the fans who made the journey – they were behind us every step of the way.”

For the eighth time this season, State found itself tied with its opponent at the end of the first half. The opening frame saw seven total shots between the two sides – four for Ole Miss and three for State.

The match stayed relatively quiet until the 74th minute when sophomore transfer Haley McWhirter scored off a rocket from distance to put State on top. Freshman Maggie Wadsworth ran down the ball to the front of the box before three Rebel defenders corralled her. The Flowery Branch, Georgia, native then laid the ball off to an oncoming McWhirter who struck the game-winning goal off her first touch.

It’s the fifth goal of the season for the Magnolia, Texas, native and is also the third game-winning goal for the Bulldog. Wadsworth picked up her third career assist on the play.

State will take close to another full week off before returning home (Thursday, Oct. 20,) for a matchup against No. 2…
