Julen Lopetegui turns down chance to take charge of Wolves

Julen Lopetegui has turned down the chance to take charge at Wolverhampton Wanderers, sources have confirmed to 90min.

The 56-year-old had emerged as Wolves’ first choice to replace Bruno Lage, who was sacked after the 2-0 defeat to West Ham, after being put up for the job by his agent Jorge Mendes.

A host of candidates applied to take over at Molineux, and Lopetegui emerged as Wolves’ preferred option after leaving Europa League specialists Sevilla, following a poor start to the season.

However, the former Spain boss has off-field priorities with his father not well and that has played a major part in him deciding against making the move to England. He informed the club of his decision on Tuesday after holding talks, with Wolves understanding of his reasons for not taking the role.

Wolves will now consider other options, which include former Roma boss Eusebio Di Francesco and ex-Olympiakos chief Pedro Martins, but an appointment is now unlikely to be made before the weekend’s clash with Nottingham Forest.
