Nottingham Forest head coach Steve Cooper has signed a new contract that promises to extend his stay at the City Ground until 2025.
Cooper’s previous deal was due to expire at the end of this season and there had been growing speculation about his future amid Forest’s poor start, with one win from eight games since their top flight return leaving them bottom of the Premier League.
Monday night’s heavy defeat to Leicester in an East Midlands derby, which saw the Foxes leapfrog Cooper’s side, was the low point of the season so far.
But 90min revealed on Thursday morning that Cooper would be afforded more time to turn things around by the Forest hierarchy.
With Forest spending £150m during the summer and making an astonishing 22 signings in total, Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has been growing impatient behind the scenes.
The Greek mogul has been keen on changes and has already brought in former Watford executive Filippo Giraldi as new sporting director.
Giraldi advised Marinakis to give Cooper more time to turn things around. The owner agreed, although he had wanted a list of potential replacements in place regardless, with ex-Liverpool, Newcastle and Everton boss Rafa Benitez one of those keen on the challenge.
Cooper’s new contract at least shows where Forest’s loyalty lies, although improving results is still vital if the club are to avoid an immediate return to the Championship.
