Republic FC’s Goalkeeping Duo Nominated for USL Championship September Save of the Month

Three Takeaways from #SACvSA - OurSports Central

October 7, 2022 – United Soccer League Championship (USL)Sacramento Republic FC News Release

Earlier today, the USL Championship announced that Republic FC goalkeepers Carlos Saldaña and Danny Vitiello have both been nominated for Fans’ Choice Save of the Month for September. Voting for the monthly honor is now open at USLChampionship.com, and will close Monday, October 10 at 9:00 a.m. PT.

Saldaña’s save came on September 3, when Sacramento faced off with Eastern Conference leader Louisville City for the first time in club history. Coming out of halftime, LouCity was pushing hard up top, but Saldaña had other plans. After a cross came into traffic in front of goal, Louisville’s Wilson Harris found himself with an opportunity from point-blank range. Saldaña laid out to deny the attempt from just feet away, his second of three saves on the night. The play was later voted the Week 26 Save of the Week – Republic FC’s second consecutive win for the weekly top stop.

Vitiello added a tremendous save his own on September 18 against 2021 USL Championship title winner Orange County SC. After Sacramento went up 2-0, USL Golden Boot leader Milan Iloski found the ball at his feet inside penalty area in the 21st minute. He sent a curling shot to the target – but it was met quickly by Vitiello, who moved over from his left to deny the visitors a chance to cut their deficit in half.
