Arsenal legend urges Edu to chase Brighton pair over Tielemans and Luiz

Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit had urged Gunners director Edu to chase a Brighton duo over Youri Tielemans and Douglas Luiz.

Arsenal reportedly made three bids for Aston Villa star Luiz on deadline day as Mikel Arteta looked to add another midfielder to the squad.

But they failed in that pursuit and decided against a move for Leicester’s Youri Tielemans, possibly as they knew the Belgium star would be available for free next summer.

Arsenal are still said to be interested in both players but Petit believes Arteta and transfer chief Edu should instead be looking to lure Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton.

“I have been hearing about Tielemans and Douglas Luiz. I would go after two Brighton players,” Petit told Compare.bet.

“Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister, they are playing very well every week. I’m a huge fan of both of them. If I got the chance I would take them for Arsenal.”

Brighton bought Mac Allister for £7.2m in 2019 but came into the side a year later having stayed in Argentina on loan.

The 23-year-old has been particularly impressive this term, scoring four goals in seven Premier League games.

Caicedo meanwhile has been the subject of plenty of transfer speculation, with Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea all linked with Ecuador international.

Signed by Graham Potter, the 20-year-old admitted last month admitted he was disappointed to see the English boss move to Chelsea.

“It made me very sad now that he [Potter] left for Chelsea, because he helped me a lot and I wanted to continue having him as a manager, but that’s football,” Caicedo said.

“You never know: today you can be here and tomorrow somewhere else, that’s the job of a footballer and a coach. At Brighton he worked very well and people love him very much. I’m very happy for him and for the great opportunity that was presented to him.”

Asked whether he could reunite with Potter at Chelsea, Caicedo said it would be a “dream” to play for “one of the best teams in the world”.

He added: “Right now I’m very focused on Brighton and the World Cup. I want to have a great World Cup and then we’ll see what happens.

“I think they are one of the best teams in the world and nobody would turn down an offer from Chelsea or any other club like that. It’d be a dream to be in the best teams in the world and succeed there.”
