Cal Returns To Action At Edwards Stadium After Three Games On The Road

BERKELEY – California women’s soccer returns to Edwards Stadium for two matches this week following a three-game road swing. The Bears host No. 21 Washington State at 3 p.m. on Thursday followed by a 1 p.m. home matchup versus Washington on Sunday.

Cal enters week eight following a split performance on the road versus Arizona State and Arizona last week. The Bears fell to Arizona State 2-1, but bounced back Sunday afternoon against Arizona to tally their sixth shutout of the season with a 1-0 victory.

Keely Roy recorded the earliest goal of the season in the Arizona State match when she scored on a penalty kick conversion in the 11th minute, her third such goal this season and fifth overall. Roy remains at the top of the Bears’ season leaderboard with five goals, 33 shots and 12 points contributed.

The match against Arizona called for a rewrite of the record books as Angelina Anderson logged her 24th career shutout. Her performance on Sunday lifted her to a tie for second place in school history with Cal Athletics Hall of Famer Maite Zabala. Karlie Lema also contributed a game-deciding goal versus the Wildcats in the 85th minute to clinch the win for Cal. Lema now has three goals on 16 shots logged in the 2022 season.

This weekend will be the 31st time that the Bears go head-to-head with both the Cougars and the Huskies. Cal leads the series with both squads in home matches, although they fell to both teams in away matches last year which were both a part of a three-game road trip.

BACK-TO-BACK
Sydney Collins was named Pac-12 defender of the week for the second straight week on 9/19 after she helped the Cal defense to two more shutouts against UNLV and Penn. Collins and her teammates helped limit their opponents to only four shots on goal and four corner kicks across the two games in weeks 4 and 5. The Bears have shutout six opponents this season, including four consecutively, and have a season-record of 398:16 of consecutive game time without giving up a goal.
