Women's Soccer Moves Up to No. 13 in United Soccer Coaches Rankings

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women’s soccer team (11-1-0, 4-0-0 ACC) moved up one spot to No. 13 in the country in the latest United Soccer Coaches Rankings.

The Panthers entered the rankings at No. 14 a week ago, marking the third-straight year Pitt has appeared in the weekly poll. Pitt reached as high as No. 19 in the poll last season and No. 12 in 2020. The Panthers most recently defeated Louisville, 1-0, last Saturday at Ambrose Urbanic Field.

After going 9-22-4 in the first two years of a massive rebuild, Pitt has gone 33-15 over the last two-plus seasons. With 11 wins in 12 attempts, Pitt is off to its best start in program history. With their next victory, the Panthers will set the program standard for the most victories in a single season. Pitt and Florida State are only remaining unbeatens in the ACC in conference play and are tied atop the standings with 12 points apiece. The Panthers have opened ACC play with four wins in four tries for the first time in program history.

With six games still to play in the 2022 regular season, Pitt has already set a program record for points in a single season with 117 (40 goals, 37 assists). The previous high-water mark was shared by the 2020-21 and 1998 teams with 104. The Panthers’ 117 points are good for second in NCAA Division I. Pitt has outscored the opposition 40-9 so far in 2022. The Panthers’ 40 goals rank as the second most in a single season in program history behind the 2021 team’s 41 and are tied for the second-most in NCAA Division I this season.

Pitt is led by senior forward Leah Pais, who has scored all seven of her team-leading goals over the last seven games. The Panthers feature a balanced scoring attack, with 13 different players finding the back of the net so far this season.

Pitt begins a stretch of three-straight road games with a visit to Chapel Hill, N.C. to clash with No. 5-ranked North Carolina (9-3-0, 2-2-0 ACC) Thursday at Dorrance Field. The matchup is set for a 7 p.m. first touch and will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra. The Panthers take their second five-game winning streak of the 2022 season into Thursday’s contest. Pitt opened the year with six-straight victories, which matched its best start to a season in program history.
