ACC Announces Women’s Soccer Player of Week Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia junior midfielder Lia Godfrey and Virginia Tech junior forward Tori Powell were selected the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Co-Offensive Players of the Week, while Virginia senior goalkeeper Tori Powell earned ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

A native of Fleming Island, Florida, Godfrey scored the game-winning goal in No. 2 Virginia’s 1-0 victory at No. 4 Duke on Sunday. The one-touch redirect came off a turnover at midfield as she was part of the pressure that helped spark the counter opportunity. It was the second game-winning goal of the season for Godfrey, with both coming on the road against top-five opponents (No. 2 North Carolina, Sept. 17). It was the fourth game-winning goal of Godfrey’s career, with three coming away from home against top-10 opponents.

Powell scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 85th minute of Virginia Tech’s 2-1, come-from-behind win over visiting No. 3 North Carolina on Saturday. It marked the Hokies’ first win over UNC since 2011 and their first victory over a top-five opponent since defeating No. 1 Virginia on Nov. 8, 2013. Powell’s goal was her fifth career game-winning goal, and her 21st career goal as a Hokie. The native of Haymarket, Virginia, is currently tied for seventh in the ACC with six goals this season.

White posted a clean sheet in the Cavaliers’ 1-0 victory at No. 4 Duke, as the Blue Devils were shut out for just the second time this season. The native of Arlington, Virginia, tallied six saves, one shy of her career high. One of her saves came in a one-on-one breakaway chance by the Blue Devils as White came off her line to make the sliding kick save in the second half. White recorded her sixth shutout of the season and improved to 8-1-1 on the year.

ACC teams’ fifth and sixth matches of the 10-game league schedule come this weekend, with a full slate of matches on Thursday and Sunday. There are a pair of contests featuring ranked opponents on Thursday, with No. 14 Pitt at No. 3 North Carolina at 7 p.m. and No. 7 Florida State at No. 2 Virginia at 8 p.m. FSU and Pitt are currently tied atop the ACC standings with 4-0 records.
