No. 1 Wake Forest Drops First Decision of the 2022 Season

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.The No. 1 ranked Wake Forest men’s soccer team (9-1-0, 3-1-0) lost its first match of the 2022 season on Saturday night, falling to No. 4 Duke (7-0-2, 3-0-1 ACC) by a final of 3-2 at Spry Stadium in front of 3,630 fans.
 
After going into the halftime break knotted at 0-0, all five goals in the match came in the second half with Duke ultimately scoring the decider in the 77th minute.
 
The loss snapped a 13-match home winning streak for the Demon Deacons that began last October.
 
Wake Forest will next host Jacksonville on Tuesday night at Spry. Kick-off for the match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
 
How It Happened

  • Wake Forest attempted the first corner kick of the match just 1:36 into the contest.
  • The Demon Deacons first shot-attempt came in the ninth minute when Oscar Sears broke free down the pitch and fired a shot that was saved.

    • Sears registered his second shot of the night in the 24th minute when he blasted a shot that nearly missed the frame.
    • The Stockholm, Sweden native almost recorded his fourth tally of the season with another shot-attempt in the 25th minute.

  • The Deacs attempted three shots in a span of 3:36 in the first half, as Babacar Niang and Roald Mitchell pressured the Duke goalkeeper.
  • Wake Forest goalkeeper Trace Alphin was not called into action in the first half, as the Blue Devils were held to only two shots in the frame, with neither attempt being on target.
