MSU Men's Soccer Hosts Wisconsin on Alumni Day on Sunday


EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State men’s soccer concludes a two-game homestand, hosting Wisconsin on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 2 p.m. The Spartans will also be celebrating Alumni Day against the Badgers on Sunday. MSU will honor former Spartan alums at halftime.

Owen Oszust and Nora Fleming will be on the call for the BTN StudentU broadcast.

After a 2-0 win against Michigan on Sept. 27, the Spartans are 3-4-2 and 1-0-1 in Big Ten action. Wisconsin stands 3-4-1 overall and 0-2-0 in league play.

SERIES HISTORY AGAINST WISCONSIN

The Badgers lead the overall series with the Spartans 24-14-7. MSU leads 2-1-2 overall in the last five games. In East Lansing, Wisconsin has a slight edge, 7-8-3. Last season in Madison, the teams tied 1-1. Michigan State had a dominating performance against Wisconsin the last time the two teams met in East Lansing  with a 4-1 win in March of 2021.

LOOKING AT THE BADGERS

Wisconsin currently holds a 3-4-1 overall record with an 0-2-0 mark in Big Ten contests. The Badgers are coming off a 0-0 tie against Northern Illinois on Sept. 28.  Wisconsin has Big Ten losses to Penn State and Rutgers. 

The Badgers are fifth in the Big Ten in points with 42 with 13 goals and 10 assists. Inaki Iribarren, Aron Saevarrson, Ignasi Marques all lead the team in assists with three. Max Keenan is fourth in the Big Ten in goals scored with four.

LOOKING IN THE REAR VIEW

Michigan State men’s soccer used an early goal from Greyson Mercer and a late goal from Jonathan Stout to combine with a clean sheet from Owen Finnerty for a 2-0 Victory for MSU over Michigan for the Big Bear Trophy Tuesday night at a rainy DeMartin Stadium.

An over-capacity packed house and a national televised audience watching on Big Ten Network witnessed a hotly-contested match that saw junior forward Mercer net a goal in the seventh minute, and freshman forward Stout’s first career goal coming in the 82nd minute. 

Spartan senior keeper Owen Finnerty registered his first clean sheet of the season. Finnerty is a grad transfer from Michigan who was playing his former team for the first time, and remained unbeaten in Big Bear Trophy games, as Tuesday’s win was the Spartans’ first in the series since 2017.
