No. 7 Syracuse too much for Hokies

No. 7 Syracuse too much for Hokies

BLACKSBURG – On a wet night at Thompson Field, Virginia Tech couldn’t find an answer for No. 7 Syracuse, falling 3-0.

Syracuse didn’t overwhelm the Hokies with shots on goal, but finished clinically when opportunities arose. The Orange carried a 1-0 lead into the half after scoring in the 28th minute off a counter attack. In the second half, 64th and 84th minute goals pushed Syracuse into delivering Tech its largest margin of defeat this season.

Virginia Tech struggled to put the finishing touch on several chances in both halves. The Hokies’ best chance came in the 52nd minute when Danny Flores centered a ball to Conor Pugh alone in the box. Although he had space, Pugh struggled to get his footing on the water-logged pitch and the Orange keeper closed in and was able to make the stop.

Tech’s Ben Martino wrapped up the night with four saves.

NOTES

  • After conceding only one first-half goal in its first seven games, Tech has allowed a goal in the first 45 minutes in three-consecutive games.
  • Tonight’s match was Tech’s first three-goal defeat at home since Nov. 25, 2018 against James Madison.
  • Jordan Black made his second career appearance and saw action for the first time in ACC play.
  • This is the first season that the Hokies have had two separate three-match losing streaks since 2011.
