Chicharito confirms LA Galaxy contract extension clause for 2023

Chicharito confirms LA Galaxy contract extension clause for 2023

Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez has confirmed he will be staying with the LA Galaxy for at least another year.

The Mexican striker revealed to reports on Thursday terms in his contract that would trigger a one-year extension to his current deal.

“I have a clause. And when I reach 11 goals and 60 percent of the minutes, it automatically renews,” he said.

It has since come to light that Chicharito, in fact, has to score 12 goals to trigger the clause, rather than the 11 he quoted. However, with the 34-year-old already hitting 17 goals and playing 2,446 of a possible 2,880 minutes in MLS so far this season, he’s already well within the required criteria.

Now in his third season with the Galaxy, Chicharito has scored 37 goals and provided five assists in 68 appearances across all competitions so far.

The Galaxy are on the verge of reaching the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since Chicharito’s arrival in 2020, sitting fifth in the Western Conference with two games to go.

Next up is a home clash with Real Salt Lake, who are eighth and just three points behind the Galaxy.
