Rieken Equalizes in Tie Against Colorado

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State women’s soccer team (7-1-2) tied visiting Colorado, 1-1, at Lower Soccer Field Thursday night in the first home conference game of the season. WSU’s Bridget Rieken scored the Cougars’ equalizing goal in the 78th minute to draw level with the Buffaloes and secure the second tie of the season.
 
Throughout the match, the Cougars dominated possession and chances, but it was Colorado with the opening goal, in the 11th minute, against the run of play. CU’s Civana Kuhlmann jumped on a loose ball at the top of the WSU box, turned and fired a shot past a diving Nadia Cooper.
 
The Cougars continued their form for the remainder of the half, finishing the period with 17 shots, and five shots on goal. In the opening half, WSU also tallied four corner kicks, while holding CU without a single corner kick.
 
Returning from the break, WSU pressed forward, looking to equalize. It appeared WSU’s leading scorer Margie Detrizio would find the back of the net in the 67th minute when MacKenzie Frimpong-Ellertson laid a pass off to Detrizio with time in the penalty area. Detrizio tried to pick out the far side-netting, but pushed it just wide and the Buffs held their narrow lead.
