STANFORD, Calif. – Fahmi Ibrahim scored for the second consecutive game, but his goal wasn’t enough as the Cal men’s soccer team lost to sixth-ranked Stanford, 5-1, on Thursday night at Cagan Stadium.
The Golden Bears’ record now stands at 3-3-3 (1-2-0 in the Pac-12). Stanford improved to 6-0-3 (1-0-2 Pac-12).
The teams had a 0-0 tie at halftime, with goalkeeper Collin Travasos making five saves in the first 45 minutes to keep the Bears in the match.
In the 63rd minute, Shane de Flores scored to give Stanford a 1-0 lead.
The Bears responded quickly to tie the game at 1-1. In the 66th minute, Cal freshman Cameron Robie sent a cross into the Stanford box that a Cardinal player almost deflected into his own net. The ball bounced off of Stanford goalie Matt Frank into the path of Ibrahim, whose touch deflected off of Frank. Ibrahim leapt over the prone keeper and stuck the ball in the net with his left foot. Ibrahim now leads the Bears in goals (4) and points (8).
In the 70th minute of the Big Clasico, Stanford’s Will Reilly scored to make the score 2-1.
Cal’s Nonso Adimabua was shown a red card in the 75th minute, and Stanford scored three more times, including through a Cam Cilley penalty kick in the 77th minute. Reilly scored again in the 79th minute and de Flores collected his second in the 85th minute to make the final score 5-1.
The Bears return to action when they play at Oregon State on Oct. 6 and then play at Washington on Oct. 9.
