Bruins Improve to 10-0 with 3-1 Win at Oregon

Oregon State

Eugene, Ore. – Top-ranked UCLA extended its winning streak to 10 and its conference unbeaten streak to 18 games, defeating a short-handed Oregon squad, 3-1, on Thursday evening.

Sofia Cook put the Bruins (10-0, 2-0 in the Pac-12) on the board first at 23:18 after she took a touch off a long pass, settled it and then fired a strike past goalkeeper Leah Freeman for her third goal of the season.

Just five minutes later, UCLA gained not one but two advantages on one play after Freeman was red-carded following a challenge on Reilyn Turner. The foul not only took the standout goalkeeper out of the game and left the Ducks with just 10 players the rest of the game, but it also gave UCLA a free kick from just outside the box. Sunshine Fontes hammered the free kick into the back of the net for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Despite the numbers disadvantage, Oregon (3-3-4, 1-1-0) came back to close to one after a goal by Alice Barbieri in the 61st minute. It was the Ducks’ first shot of the night. They finished the game with two shots total to UCLA’s 25.

Kali Trevithick gave the Bruins some breathing room in the 80th minute with a rocket from the left side, her third goal in three games this season.

The Bruins will next play at Oregon State on Sunday at 12pm PT in a game televised on Pac-12 Networks.
