Cal Travels To Arizona For Two

The Bears Take On ASU, Arizona This Weekend

BERKELEY – Cal women’s soccer heads to Arizona for two matches this week as they take on Arizona State at 7 p.m. on Thursday followed by a 12 p.m. matchup against Arizona on Sunday afternoon.

Cal will play two games on the road followed by six of the next eight in the friendly confines of Edwards Stadium. The Bears defense has been fantastic so far in 2022 as the Bears have only allowed 34 shots on goal against in their 10 contests, just 3.4 shots on target per game. The Bears had a nearly 400-minute shutout streak snapped in their last game against No. 1 UCLA. The Bears have also tallied five shutouts this year.

Karlie Lema scored her second goal of the season on a nicely-worked team play, while Keely Roy notched her fourth goal on a penalty kick in Cal’s game against UCLA. Roy now has a team-best four goals this year. Ayo Oke had her fourth assist of the season against the Bruins as the sophomore has been one of the best creators in the country.

This will be the 28th meeting between the Wildcats and Bears and the 26th time that ASU and Cal have faced off. The Bears have beaten both squads 11 more times than they’ve lost in their history. Last season, Cal won matches against both Arizona and Arizona State, 1-0, as part of a three-game winning and three-game shutout streak. Karlie Lema scored against Arizona, while Ayo Oke scored the only goal of the game vs. ASU.

BACK-TO-BACK
Sydney Collins was named Pac-12 defender of the week for the second straight week on 9/19 after she helped the Cal defense to two more shutouts against UNLV and Penn. The Bears have now shutout four consecutive opponents and have 374:20 of consecutive game time without giving up a goal. Collins and her teammates helped limit their opponents to only four shots on goal and four corner kicks across two games.

MANRIQUE LEADS HOT WEEK
Ari Manrique had her best week in a Cal shirt as the sophomore scored in games against UNLV and Penn to wrap up non-conference play. She also tallied an assist vs. Penn to score five points on the week, outscoring her point total from the 2021 season. Manrique’s play contributed to Cal scoring a team-best five goals over two games.
