Michigan Falls to MSU in Battle for Big Bear Trophy

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The University of Michigan men’s soccer team (2-5-2, 1-2-0 B1G) was blanked by Michigan State (3-4-2, 1-0-1 B1G) 2-0 in the Battle for the Big Bear Trophy Tuesday evening (Sept. 27) at DeMartin Stadium.

The Wolverines outshot the Spartans 17-11 and had seven shots on goal compared to MSU’s two, but were unable to capitalize on any opportunities.

Freshman Nicholas Kaloukian led U-M with six shots and two on goal, while Brennan Callow, Bryce Blevins and Cameron Martin all tallied two shots for Michigan. The Wolverines’ best chance came in the first half on an Inaki Rodriguez shot that was saved just inches from the goal line by a Michigan State defender.

MSU struck on its first shot attempt at it headed the ball down and in off a long pass into the box in the seventh minute of action. The Wolverines looked to even the score when Kaloukian took back-to-back shots in the 11th minute of play.

In the 38th minute of action, Rodriguez beat the keeper to his right side, but the shot was blocked in front of the goal line by a Spartan defender as MSU took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

The Wolverines outshot Michigan State 9-3 in the first half of action and earned one corner kick.
